Fred, at first can you tell us who you are and what you do?
I'm Fred Vogel, writer, director, producer and President of TOETAG PICTURES based out of Pittsburgh PA.
How did you get into the world of filmmaking and why?
I started out as a make-up artist, working as an instructor at Tom Savini's Make-up School in the late 90's I always wanted to direct movies, I thought make-up was a good way to get in the door. I directed my first feature August Underground in 2001.
You're famous for your August Underground trilogy, what was your inspiration for these movies and why this kind of movies?
I was teaching at the time and some of my students were writing to some real serial killers and this made me mad because they looked at these guys as some sort of cult hero's. I wanted to make a movie that showed serial killers in a true light not as hero's but as real monsters.
I describe the movies as fake snuff, a audience attack. Was that what you had in mind when making these movies?
The August Underground films needed to be the most realistic portrayals of serial killers for the movies to work, I pulled no punches, crossed every boundaries, I've been banned, arrested and respected for making theses films
Maybe you've also heard of Guinea Pig. This is a series of movies which are also described as fake snuff. One of the things Guinea Pig is known about is that a sicko re-enacted a scene from this movie. Aren't you afraid that people will re-enact scenes from your movies?
I've heard the stories and I'm not afraid of people going out there re-enact scenes from my films because if they do I'm sure they were crazy way before they saw an AU or GP film.
You've also acted in your movies. If you have to give a preference for one of them, which do you prefer and why?
I love all my films. AU because it was my first, AUM because it was the movie that brought TOETAG together, AUP because it's the last and I think the best film in the series, and The Redsin Tower because it is my most polished film and took TOETAG to the next level. I can't really give a preference for acting or directing.
In August Underground Mordum you've worked with Killjoy from Necrophagia. You've also worked on their Necrotorture and Sickness DVD. What can you tell us about this cooperation with them?
I got a phone call from Killjoy out of the blue, he heard from Rod Gudino Editor of Rue Morgue Magazine about AU and wanted to see the film. I never heard of Killjoy or Necrophagia, so he sent me a package of Necrophagia goodies and I sent him a copy of AU. He really loved the film and I liked Necrophagia as well, so we had to work together. We shot scenes with him for AUM and we became really good friends. He invited me to go to Europe to tour with the band and shoot an AU style movie called Sickness. We are still great friends and I hope to work with him again in the future.
You've also worked with Nick Palumbo on his Murder Set Pieces. What can you tell us about that?
I was contacted by Nick to do Effects for his film M-S-P. Nick was a fan of AU and wanted that realistic gore that TOETAG is known for. So Jerami Cruise the Head of TTPFX and I went to Vegas to do the movie. It was a long, hard shoot that was a great learning experience.
Red Sin Tower is more of a regular type of horror movie. What can you tell us about this movie?
The Redsin Tower is a film that has lots of homage's to some of our favourites parts of the genre, from Slasher, Possession, Stoner, and 80's Cheese. Redsin is a fun but also has the TOETAG touch where you know its gonna get mean.
Which movie you have worked one is your favorite and why?
Like I said before all my films have special meanings to me, but if I had to pick I'd go with August Underground's PENANCE. It is my favourite because out of all the AU films we had the most laid back experience making it, and a huge relief knowing that the series was finally over.
What kind of responses do you get to your movies?
I get all kinds responses and they are exactly what I expected.
You've been called the future of horror. Do you see yourself as the future of horror?
I think I'm part of the new generation making horror. I've been very lucky that my films have found an audience and are here to stay, that's what any director would want.
What do you think of the future of horror in general?
Well I know its not PG-13 CRAP, I hope to see more great horror come from the underground, the ideas are darker and fresher down here.
If you have the budget, the complete artistic freedom and you can get every actor you want (dead or alive). What kind of movie will you be making, with whom and why?
Money doesn't hold back my artistic freedom; LESS MONEY makes me more artistic.
Can you tell us something about your current project(s) or about upcoming projects?
I'm working on a few things right now bit I hate to give it away, I believe that bad luck when you jump the gun. Lets just say you ain't seen nothing yet.
Anything else that you want to tell us?
Thank you to all the fans for spreading the sickness about TOETAG.
Fred, thank you so much for your time!
