Tijdens zijn leven diende hij zijn meerderen als een schuldeiser. Hij dacht dat zijn leven een wending nam op het moment dat hij een grote som geld vond en dit achterhield. Deze keuze zet Mitchell echter lijnrecht tegenover de mannen waar hij voor werkt en die op zoek zijn naar dit geld. Wat volgt is een strijd die hij echter met dodelijke afloop moet bekopen. Bovenstaand is een korte plotbeschrijving, maar dat is ook alles wat er nodig is om het plot van A Day of Violence te beschrijven. We krijgen met A Day of Violence een “no nonsense in your face” film die je het geweld visueel en zonder scrupules brengt. In de eerste instantie kan A Day of Violence je aan Britse gangster films zoals het bekende werk van Guy Ritchie doen denken, maar die vergelijking gaat in principe vanaf het begin al niet meer op. De enige vergelijking die daarmee te trekken is, is dat A Day of Violence uit Engeland komt en ook een gangster film is en daarmee houdt het op. Er is echter ook een andere vergelijking die in ieder geval bij mij snel om de hoek komt kijken en dat is de vergelijking met de ‘ Eurotrash’ uit de jaren 70 en 80. Deze grauwe actiefilm doet mij onder andere denken aan Lucio Fulci’s The Smuggler. Voor degenen die niet bekend zijn met het ‘Eurotrash’ genre hier een korte omschrijving. ‘ Eurotrash’ kent zoals zijn naam al aangeeft zijn oorsprong in Europa. De filmmakers achter deze films zijn ware exploitation regisseurs zoals een Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Mario Bava en vele anderen. Het verhaal is over het algemeen een gangster verhaal met exploitation special effects zoals rondvliegende ledematen, overmatig veel bloed en expliciet in beeld gebracht geweld. A Day of Violence is wat mij betreft een film die direct genoemd mag worden bij de genreklassiekers, want zo voelt deze film en zo kijkt hij ook weg. Het is dat het te zien is dat we hier te maken hebben met een film van nu, anders zou deze film qua gevoel en grauwheid zo uit de jaren 80 kunnen komen. Diepgaande plotontwikkeling en karakteruitdieping is waar we een film zoals A Day of Violence niet voor kijken. We kijken naar A Day of Violence om een “no nonsense in your face” film te zien. Dat is ook exact wat Darren Ward met A Day of Violence levert aan de kijker. We worden daarnaast ook nog eens getrakteerd op genre held Giovanni Lombardo en een uitstekend passende synthesizer soundtrack. ------------------ Mitchell Parker (Nick Rendell) lies dead in the morgue. This choice pits Mitchell right against the men he works for and who are looking for this money. What ensues is a battle which costs him his life. What is written above is a short description of the plot, but that is all that’s needed to describe the plot of A Day of Violence. With A Day of Violence we are presented with a “no nonsense, in your face” film which shows the violence visually and without scruples. At first A Day of Violence can remind you of British gangster films, the likes of Guy Ritchie’s work, but this comparison doesn’t hold up from the early beginning. The only comparison that can be made is that A Day of Violence comes from English soil and that it is a gangster film, but after that all comparison ends. There is however another comparison that sneaks into my brain at least and that is the comparison that can be made with the seventies and eighties “Eurotrash”. This bleak action movie reminds me of Lucio Fulci’s “The Smuggler” amongst others. For those not familiar with the “Eurotrash” genre a short description will follow. “Eurotrash” has its roots in Europe as indicated. The filmmakers behinds these films are true exploitation directors, the likes of Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Mario Bava and many others. The story is commonly a gangster story with exploitation special effects, such as limbs flying around, excessive usage of blood en explicit violence. A Day of Violence is, as far as I’m concerned, a film which can directly be listed amongst the genre classics. The films has that same feeling and can be watched as one. If it wasn’t for the fact that it is obvious that we’re dealing here with a recently made movie, but otherwise this movie could have come straight out of the eighties in terms of its bleakness and its feel. Profound plot development and in-depth character development aren’t among the reasons why we would watch A Day of Violence. We watch A Day of Violence because it’s a “no nonsense, in your face” kind of movie. And that is exactly what Darren Ward presents the viewer with A Day of Violence. Besides that we are being treated to genre legend Giovanni Lombardo and a synthesizer soundtrack that suits the movie perfectly.
